Excellent shot – it prompted me to look at some videos of these craft flying. That tiltrotor mechanism is pretty incredible – lots to potentially go wrong though!

They’ve had accidents, but it’s a military machine and those tend to be expensive and prone to mechanical problems.

Expensive is putting it mildly – I was astounded when I saw the cost of these aircraft.
They must be complex to fly even when mechanically all is well – a bit like patting one’s head and rubbing one’s tummy at the same time perhaps?

I believe that’s how the pilots operate them. You must have seen the top secret pilot’s manual!

Ones very like these fly overhead here as we’re fairly near an Army base 😦 Great shot though..

That must get noisy at times because these are very loud. They’re not supposed to use Upolu very often and these days seem to be sticking to that. There was a period a couple of years back when they were there most days and a lot of people complained, so they stopped for a while.

Luckily it’s all over pretty quickly when it happens.

Yes, and very loud. When they’re flying, I almost always hear them before I see them.

Yes and no. They are of course enormously complicated and expensive, but their safety record is a bit shaky.

yikes, that doesn’t sound good

No, but there’s a fair amount of military hardware, worldwide, that could answer to that description.
