When I took this photo, I was thinking of the James Thurber short story, “The Owl Who Was God,” which can be read here. The main differences between that story and this photo are that pueos have very good eyesight during daylight hours, which is when they’re active, and no animals were harmed in the taking of this photo. The bird flew away shortly after I took it. He does have that look though.

What an extraordinary story from Thurber – and it is probably as topical today as when it was written. Glad that the pueo didn’t linger on the road in harms way.

It’s a timely, or timeless, story. I think vehicles are probably the greatest danger for pueos so I was glad when it took off again.

Sadly, here too a lot of owls are killed or injured by vehicles.

Yes, but not the attitude to have if what’s coming is some speeding SUV. I was relieved when it took off again.

I do like this photo. The pueo has such a look about it. I was hoping it wouldn’t hang around there because people, such as myself, zip along this windy road.
