Whatever the weather

This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Weather.’ See more responses here. Last month, I did a post about our local weather here. Weather in one place can be very different from another place just a few miles away.

The basics are that the east side of the island is wetter and cloudier, the west side, sunny and dry. Both sides are warm, but not as hot as they might be thanks to the prevailing northeast trade winds, though they’re not as consistent as they used to be. Paradoxically, the driest places on the island are also the coldest, the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, which are usually above the clouds.

So here are a few photos illustrating some of the varying weather we get, even if it wasn’t forecast.

Clouds tend to build during the day, sometimes bringing rain, sometimes just the threat of it.

It’s funny you should ask, Jo. I had a post scheduled earlier this week, but bumped it for my manta ray encounter. It’ll run later this week, but basically Hawaii’s white sand beaches are coral sand. They’re formed by parrotfishes crunching up coral, extracting the nutrients, and expelling the rest. So when people lie on that white sand working on their tan, they’re essentially stretched out on parrotfish poop!

So beautiful. There are areas in the PNW that are like this and it is joked that in Central oregon you can experience all 4 seasons in one day. And it’s true. But it’s beautiful too.

I think most places have their little weather quirks. The nice thing here is that it’s almost always warm. I like that!

We get a bit of everything, that’s for sure. The other day I was down at Hapuna. Nice day, gentle breeze. Suddenly, a gust of wind went through sending things flying. Then back the way it was before. No idea what that was about!
