
I saw this crown-of-thorns star working its way across the rocks in shallow water. Those spiky spines are venomous so this is not something to handle. Also visible in this photo are some equally spiky, though not poisonous, rock-boring urchins

I know what you mean. They consume the coral here, too but, in Hawaii at least, the damage they cause is far outstripped by human pollutants and bleaching events due to rising water temperatures.

Nature seems to make a habit of making beautiful spiky things lethal – guess everyone but humans pick up on the signs!
