A little snapshot of things tucked into the rocks along the Big Island. There’s a red pencil urchin and blue-black urchin, a patch of cauliflower coral, and a cowry, probably a reticulated cowry. And if you look closely, there’s a bright-eyed damselfish swimming between the coral and red pencil urchin.

I really like the detail and splashes of colour in these photos. How nice to see a live cowrie. Even the smallest rock pool is crammed with life!

I love seeing rays and sharks and dolphins, but the smaller creatures are equally fascinating. I try to remember to spend time puttering in the shallows and seeing what they have to offer.

It is definitely worth puttering and the light is so great in the shallows.
