This evergreen tree, also known as Natal Plum, hails from South Africa. The fruit is edible and the flowers fragrant. In Hawaii, it’s also grown as a hedge, particularly in coastal areas, as it tolerates both salt and wind.

I thought you’d recognize that. Actually, I was nervous that I might have the wrong ID because I knew you’d know what it was!

🙂 Here among English speakers it is often called the num-num (where the ‘u’ sounds like ‘oo’) from the Afrikaans name noem-noem, and it is also commonly known by its Zulu name amathungulu. When I was young I misheard it and I thought the plant was called Martin Gooloo!
