This is a scene I like to refer to as ‘gang activity.’ Blue Goatfishes are predators and hunt in packs, often in the company of other fish, such as Bluefin Trevallies and Pacific Trumpetfishes, as well as eels and octopuses.
The fish on the left is showing its barbels, which are used to ‘sense’ prey and also can be poked into tight spots to flush out prey.

The Blue Gang sounds a bit scary from the prey’s perspective – seems like the target wouldn’t have much of a chance

It would be scary, those barbels poking into your hiding places. Often they hunt with eels or an octopus and they can squeeze into the smallest spaces. It would be hard to remain still and hope they go by.

I’ll never think of octopusses the same after watching the documentary My Octopuc Teacher that a blogger recommended me! Maybe you’d like it too, it’s on Netflix

I did see that movie and I liked it pretty well. I was a bit disappointed that it seemed more about him than the octopus.

Why ‘goat’ fish?

I think because the barbels look somewhat like a goat’s beard!

They are. They can catch the light quite beautifully.
