My regular swim these days, passes through the territory of the local Great Barracuda ohana. It’s quite common for them to gather in the wake of swimmers, mostly I think, in case the swimmers are spear fishing and might snag something they can steal.
Last week, this barracuda approached me from the front and gave me quite the look, but since it was no more than a foot long, I wasn’t too concerned.
A couple of days ago, I had a similar encounter with a similar-sized fish. This time the barracuda approached from dead ahead and only turned away at the last minute.

Had either of these been one of the giants, which can be three or four feet long and much bigger around, I’d probably have been wetting myself!
The second photo is posted for Bushboy’s Last on the Card photo challenge. See more responses here.

Eek, yes, those teeth on the top one look rather menacing.

They have a menacing look whether you see the teeth or not. I used to be more skittish around them than sharks, but like the sharks, they’re mostly just curious.

We’ve had a couple of shark attacks lately so curious seems hard to believe.

Well, some sharks are more dangerous than others. The reef sharks I see around here are mostly curious. Now tiger sharks ….

That is the look for sure Graham. Stick to the tiny ones. I would also be rather concerned if I was approached by a four footer.
Thanks for joining in 🙂 🙂

Barracudas used to give me the willies, more so than sharks. But I’ve got more used to them these days and have never felt threatened by them, regardless of size.

Maybe they think you’re one of them- just a bit of an awkward shape?

Alas, I don’t think so. Fish notice how clumsy people are in the water. They must be mystified as to why we’re top of the food chain!
