
Achilles Tangs are one of those fish that I see frequently, but rarely get the chance to photograph. They hang around in the shallows, but scoot for cover when approached. This fish was doing just that, but I managed to get this photo before it disappeared around the corner.

Very pretty. What an interesting name, too!

My fish book says the fish is named for the Greek warrior Achilles, because the orange ‘finger mark’ near the tail recalls the story that Achilles’ mother held her baby by the heels and dipped him in the River Styx to make him invulnerable.
