I was driving home from Waimea when I noticed a movement off to my left. I thought it looked like a Pueo, the Hawaiian Short-eared Owl, endemic to the islands. Sure enough, it proved to be one, gliding over the pastureland, looking for an evening meal. I watched it for some time, going back and forth over the pasture looking for movement and a meal below.
Unlike most owls, Pueos are active during the day, and so are easier to spot. The bottom photo is an older photo thatβs run before (here), but gives a clearer view of the bird and what it eats!

Wow, great photos! And that little mouse gives us a size perspective! He’s a bit bird!

Thanks Lisa. They’re smaller than barn owls, for example, but still a decent size, especially to a mouse!

Yeah, itβs that mouse that makes the picture!!!

That was a banner day. Saw lots of owls and lucked into this one catching its lunch!

Wonderful photos. Glad you added this to the birds of the week. It has such a narrow range, all the Hawaiian Islands, but only those!

Thanks I.J.. The way I do my blog, I won’t be posting each week, but I thought I’d try to focus on native Hawaiian birds, some of which have a much smaller range than these pueos!

We have snowy owls here and we often spot them at dusk. Never captured one so well in a picture.

I don’t see these as often as I used to, but I always pull over if there’s even a chance of a photo!

Awesome captures of the pueo, Graham! I hear owls here but never see them!

I see them, but never hear them. Maybe we can arrange an exchange!

Awesome creatures, aren’t they?

They are. I don’t see too many these days, especially on that road, so this was a treat.
