I saw this Red Pencil Urchin in the shallows of Kawaihae Harbor. In the gentle waves, it oscillated between mostly exposed and mostly covered.

Makes it easy to identify in the water or from shore.

Striking colour. It would be hard to miss. Are they poisonous if you step on them?

The spines are rounded so not really an issue. I don’t think they’re poisonous either.

Not a shrinking violet, Graham. I rather like it.

Would they sting if you touched one?

I don’t think so. You can get infections from stepping on many urchins, but these spines have rounded tips so wouldn’t penetrate the skin.
