On a recent swim, I saw this Peppered Moray Eel zipping towards me in fairly shallow water. My response was to start taking photos. The eelโs response was to stop dead, raise its head up, and give me a decidedly unimpressed look.
We held our positions for a short while and then I edged off to one side and the eel did the same, before deciding enough was enough and scooting to sanctuary under a large rock.

Okay, it makes sense ๐

Beautiful photos. I don’t know if I could be so close to the eel ๐

There’s always an element of uncertainty about these encounters, but so far I’ve never had any problems with any of the eels I’ve seen. It’s those who get right in their face or start poking them that have to worry.

Would it have bitten? It looks ready to take a chunk.

Some eels have a bad reputation, but not this kind. I’ve never had a problem with them though I do know someone who lost part of a finger to an eel. I think that was trying to remove it from a fishing hook though.

Glad you liked the Sheree. I was a little worried when I first saw it coming straight at me.
