There’s a new playground in town, specifically at Kamehameha Park in Kapa’au. The official opening is Saturday, but I took a sneak peek yesterday.

The playground was surrounded by orange tape so I couldn’t get a close look, but my first impression was that I was glad I wasn’t a kid anymore. I didn’t see a thing I’d know what to do with! The story that alerted me to the new playground noted it “features new tactile and interactive elements, challenging climbing structures, and various spinners and swings.” Some of the pieces looked like things that could cause a good deal of pain. Others suggested it would be handy to have a jaws-of-life nearby.

No, if I was a kid I’d probably end up sitting on the ground, rubbing my arm against the synthetic turf, to see how long it took before I caught fire.

It looks pretty much soulless. Perhaps follow up in time with photos of children actually using (enjoying?) these industrial looking facilities? I’m surprised the term “playground” is still in use. It looks more like something along the lines of an exercise facility rather than something involving play!

I shall go back to see it in use, though taking photos of kids at playgrounds can get you arrested these days!

Yes – I only thought about the dodginess after I sent my comment!

Occasionally I’m glad I’m not a kid any more.

I often feel that way.

Hilarious, Graham. My teacher head started identifying all the new catch phrases which will, in time, be replaced by others that call for different equipment. I, too, think most of it looks dangerous, but then some of the stuff we had, which they now ban, was equally so. And so much fun.

Times change and with it the equipment. They banned merry go rounds here for being too dangerous, but I don’t see how this looks safer.

Agreed. They have smaller spinning things, higher off the ground. And i bet they don’t have ‘ merry’ in their title.

I hope that there will be supervision at this playpark. It looks very risky to me…

It must be OK. There are too many lawyers in this country for it not to be!

That is a rather flash playground. I went to a park in town and they have things I looked and puzzled at as well.
Where are the things that can hurt you? I survived metal slippery dips on hot days, swings with heavy metal chains roundabout that could throw you off when spun so fast 😂
Thanks for joining in Graham 😀

There just seemed to be a ton of stretchy lines and chains in close proximity. I could see myself getting irrevocably entangled, but I’m sure it must be safe. There are too many lawyers in this country for them to install anything dubious.

By the way, when we visited Tokyo (15 years ago), there was an animated figure there called something like ”the boy on fire”. Maybe he was a friend of yours!

Interesting, since I’ve become a playground regular! It looks a bit complicated but pretty similar to the ones we have here. They are all standardised now, with a EU approval stamp on them, so they are all pretty similar

I think that’s the same here. They have to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, so they must be safe.
