I spotted this A’ama Crab molt on a rock when I was about to get in the water. The molts are so complete they look like live crabs. The blank eyes are the giveaway. This one was notable for its color. As the molts sit in the sun, they turn an orange-red, so this one was likely very recent.

What an interesting find! Thanks for sharing!

Wow. What do they look like after they molt? How long does it take to grow a new shell?

Actually, I don’t know the answer to your questions. I’ll have to look that up.

Do you ever step aside quickly, or wait for a few minutes to see if itβs more than a molt?

I used to think they were live crabs, but now I recognize them for what they are pretty quickly.

How weird! I had no idea they did this, Graham.

I didn’t know crabs molted either. I’m amazed at how they can shed such a complete layer of themselves.

I see them quite often, but the ones I see are usually quite red. This is the closest one to what the live crab looks like.
