Pentagons on the beach

I saw these two Cushion Stars on the beach in Kawaihae Harbor. Cushion Stars come in a variety of shapes and colors.

Love them. Star fish are always a good find and I’d mistake these for something misshapen.

They are so good Graham. I haven’t seen any for years. I think they are more south of me

Mostly I see them while snorkeling. On shore, it needs to be the right place and a low tide.

Are they shells or something like an urchin, Graham? Not familiar with these at all.

They are Echinoderms, the same family as urchins. Unlike most urchins, sea stars don’t have spines.
