During yesterday’s swim, this Manta Ray appeared in front of me. It passed directly beneath me, and was clearly not inclined to pause and check out the ungainly creature above it. It’s the first I’ve seen in a long while, and certainly the first this year. Manta Ray encounters are a treat, especially as this one was beautifully marked and in great condition, which is always good to see.

Yes, you’ve caught the markings beautifully.

I think this ray might have had the best markings I’ve seen.

Wow! Beautiful!
I have to ask how you managed to serendipitously have your camera at the ready while swimming?

I always take a camera when I get in the water. I have a little Canon point and shoot in a waterproof housing. Since I’m snorkeling, I get enough propulsion with my fins that I don’t use my arms much.

It feels like a gift each time I see one.

So cool. Sorta wish it came back to check you out like the last time you posted ray photos

I like it when they do that, but I’m OK with them just passing by too. Even a fleeting encounter is better than none.
