Indeed the adult does look solemn – though beautifully lit, it looks sad and somehow plaintive!

The adults have great gravitas, but there solemn demeanor is actually cover for their hunting. Their prey is invertebrates in the sand, which they can see from a great distance. Since they hunt mostly at night, I haven’t seen one swoop down to grab something.
