Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa

A Wedgetail Triggerfish in the waters off Hawaii.

Also known as the Wedgetail Triggerfish, this is Hawaii’s official state fish. The name is easier to pronounce than it looks and it’s not even the longest fish name here. That honor goes to the Lauwiliwilinukunukuʻoiʻoi, a name given to the two longnose butterflyfish species in Hawaii.

Oh now you burst my bubble! I was so proud that I know how to pronounce Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa !! I can’t even phantom how to pronounce that other one! However, that’s a fabulous photo!

It’s a great looking fish. That’s a pectoral fin with red at the base. I just love how this fish has evolved into these colors, and especially that little touch of red.
