
This is the smallest Whitemouth Moray Eel I’ve seen here. It was in a hole in the rock high up in the water so I could get quite close. I’ve taken a lot of eel photos over the years and I thought, even as I took these photos, it would be ironic if this little eel shot out and was the first one to bite me. Happily, it remained where it was, next to a Red Pencil Urchin, which gives a sense of scale.

That is small. I did laugh at the thought of it zooming out and biting you. That would still hurt a lot

Yes, it would hurt. I like in these photos that you can see the teeth. Some eels have an extra row down the center of the mouth!

Thanks Karen. I doubt I’ll ever do a book, but I have several hanging on the wall, which I enjoy looking at.

He’s not really hiding. Eels spend a good deal of time poking out from holes like this, I think to snag passing prey!
