Floating marine debris can be a menace to ocean wildlife, being swallowed by, or wrapping around everything from fish to turtles to whales. But it can also be repurposed by little fish into a relatively safe haven for them as they negotiate those dangerous early days of life.
Here, a variety of small sergeant fishes have found some cover under a clump of line.

Thank heavens that sh#* has some good purpose.

It is a small consolation. Better if their shelter is something natural.

Great photo. How tempted were you to taking the rubbish back to shore? What a choice flotsam or fish 🤔

I didn’t take this back since it hosted a new little ecosystem. It was very small in any case.

It is, but it would be better if the debris wasn’t there for them.

Indeed. Alas, the occasional upside generally doesn’t balance out the many downsides.

I hate how us humans have filled the oceans with so much rubbish, but it is lovely to see there can be an occasional upside. Wonderful photography

You’re absolutely right. These fish would normally congregate under clumps of weeds and that sort of thing. As it turned out, one of the fish sheltering in this photo, is a freckled driftfish, rarely seen in Hawaii!

ooh hope it was okay in your waters, and eventually made its way back to its usual area. Or is this part of life in the waters changing as the oceans warm up?

It’s not in the wrong area. It’s more that it’s a deep water fish and so not often seen close to shore. Those that are seen close in tend to be juveniles, which this one was.
