A stick insect unclear on the concept

stick insect

Stick insects rely on camouflage for protection, sitting stationary on a branch or stem and looking indistinguishable from their perch. This stick insect was hanging out on this uniformly blue fabric, which is just about the polar opposite of its preferred strategy.

Maybe, but they do seem to set down anywhere. I’ve seen them on railings, house siding, car tires and other spots where they can easily be seen. Perhaps their ability to remain motionless is good enough cover even if they don’t blend into the background.

I suspect that it’s their remaining motionless and resembling a stick that provides most of the protection for them. After all, the wind could blow a small “stick” anywhere.
