Green turtle says hello

During a recent snorkeling trip, I happened to turn around and saw this turtle heading toward me. Usually they will head off in a different direction when they see something as strange as me, but this one came up quite close before sliding off to the side and gliding away again.

As you can see, there’s nothing green in the appearance of green turtles. The name comes from the color of their fat, found between their organs and carapace.

      Thanks. I always enjoy taking photos of turtles, especially in the water. Even when I don’t get photos, I love seeing them glide by. They’re so graceful in the water, a striking contrast to how they get around on land.

      Thanks. The head on shot is such a hit or miss thing. By the time it’s focused, so I can take the photo, the subject has often moved out of focus again. I was very happy to get this shot. I’ve got a few pictures like the bottom photo and I never tire of them. When the sunlight catches the turtle’s shell it just glows. It’s really quite beautiful.

          I had to go back and look, because I didn’t remember a second turtle and, alas, there isn’t. The small, dark creature is, I think, a black triggerfish heading in the opposite direction, but I can see why you thought it was a turtle.
