Ruddy turnstones are one of several species of birds that summer in Alaska and winter in Hawaii. Here, the bird is known as the ‘Akekeke, the name resembling its call. In the photos, this small group of ruddy turnstones was foraging along the Kona coast at low tide, looking for invertebrates to eat.

Such unusually beautiful birds. They visit SA coastal areas too as non-breeding migrants. I really like your photos. I imagine the birds are fairly skittish if approached?

They maintain their distance. They’re one of those birds that, if you edge toward them, they never seem to get any closer. I have to be really abrupt for them to actually fly off.
