I saw this Hawaiian coot at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, north of Kailua Kona. It was puttering around in one of the inland lagoons, periodically diving for food, as it is in these photos.

A new species for me. I didn’t realise Hawaii had an endemic Coot.

A descendant of the American Coot I believe. It’s endangered here, though I see usually see several when I visit Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, north of Kailua Kona.

Yes I did some research. For some reason I had that there was only the Eurasian and American Coot in my head. There’s quite a few more, Argentina and adjacent countries in South America have several.
