This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘For the Birds.’ See more offerings here.
Bird baths and bird feeders are a couple of subjects for this theme and these photos are of what is, in effect, a bird feeder. It’s a fish pond at Hualalai Resort and where there’s a fish pond, there will likely be herons. I saw half a dozen perched around one of the ponds there, but this adult black-crowned night heron was the only one I saw catch anything.
It lunged its beak into the water and pulled this good-sized fish out onto the bank. After a few minutes of tossing the fish around to get it lined up properly, the bird swallowed it whole. The photo at right shows the fish on its way down.

I love to look at herons, especially the all white ones. My friend is not to found of them though, as one recently cleaned out all the fish in his coy (Koi) pond.

They do love a fish pond. I did a previous post about that at https://grahamsisland.com/2018/03/06/a-black-crowned-night-heron-snaffles-a-tilapia/

I’ll have to take a look at that post.

Beautiful heron, and how lucky to be to be there when it had a successful catch.

Well, there were several around and I think the pond was well stocked with fish. In a way, I was surprised that this was the only one I saw.

Always fascinating to watch birds in the wild feed, Graham. I’ve seen a pelican comically working a crab within his beak and pouch, but they all seem to manage. Great shots of the heron on action!

It’s interesting watching them hunt and feed, but there are perils. I did a previous post a heron that had a bit more trouble with it’s fish (https://grahamsisland.com/2018/03/06/a-black-crowned-night-heron-snaffles-a-tilapia/).
