The reddish color of this day octopus is an indication that I had startled it. If it felt threatened, it would turn white. I like how the patterns on the rock it’s on looks like sucker marks from its tentacles.

Brilliant colours and textures in this shot. My, what big eyes it has.

Actually, the eyes are fairly small. They’re little ovals in the bumps on the top. The larger round bits, one on each side, are the siphons which are used for respiration and propulsion. I still look at them and think that must be the eyes.

It makes for a dramatic photo, and I like your observation of the marks on the rocks looking like sucker marks!

One of my favorite things about this photos is that the suckers of the tentacles are quite clear.

Don’t we all turn white when threatened?! and blush red when embarrassed? I wonder what it was doing before you snuck up on it?

It was probably just sitting there, in a depression in the rock when I loomed over its horizon.
