Pololu beach, at the northern end of the Big Island, is not a place for swimming, despite these people in the water. Strong rips can take an unwary person out to sea in a heartbeat. But it’s a good spot for a walk or just for viewing from Pololu Lookout, up above, at the end of the end of the highway.
A good place to surf when conditions are right?

I’ve never seen anyone surfing here. This part of the coast is OK for surfing when conditions are right, but there are easier places to access than this beach for surfers.

I love the whitecaps too, but I’d never go swimming there. Too thrilling for me!

Beautiful! We took the short hike down to the beach on one of our early trips to the Big Island and loved it. Everytime we tried on later trips it was too rainy.

Yes, it’s a bit treacherous when it’s wet underfoot. If you do get a dry day, try continuing up the gully on the other side. It leads to a bench with great views down the coast and into the next valley.
