Ghost bike falling

A ghost bike attached to a fallen tree in Hawaii

Back in 2021 I posted about ghost bikes (here). The bike in the top photo of that post was attached to a small tree, which has had the misfortune to blow over in a recent storm. So the sad memorial is looking even sadder currently.

It’s sad, yes, but these memorials are generally fairly well-maintained. The bikes are painted and decorations tend to be refreshed regularly, so that’s something.

Ghost bikes can be found across the U.S.. They mark places where cyclists were killed or badly hurt in road accidents. They’re put there as a reminder to both cyclists and drivers to take care and share the road.

I expect the folks who set these up will come by and reset the bike, possible on the same tree. The ones I’ve seen seem to be pretty well maintained. The flags on this one look quite fresh.
