Cycling is a popular activity on the Big Island. The road from Kailua Kona to Hawi is wide with good shoulders, and it’s a favorite with cyclists because it’s the route of the cycling portion of the Ironman race. However, as is the case everywhere, it can be a dangerous activity, sharing the highway with large, fast-moving vehicles.
Ghost bikes serve as memorials for cyclists killed or badly hurt when things go wrong. These are two I see daily on my commute.
There are a few here as well but no one rides on the busy roads. maybe there could be some on the back roads. A great idea to bring attention to the drivers to be aware of cyclists

That’s the idea, a little reminder to both motorists and cyclists of the dangers on the road.

Are these permanent or ad hoc memorials? Ive seen ad hoc tributes of flowers on hiways but never ghost bikes.. its a fitting tribute.

They’re basically permanent. Some might get taken or removed, but mostly local cyclists keep them up in decent condition. It’s a relatively recent idea from the U.S. mainland in the early 2000s I believe.
