At Upolu Airport, there’s a mock orange hedge and through it grows a passion vine. The hedge used to be trimmed once in a while, but the flowers attracted to all kinds of insects and was teeming with life. Passion Vine Butterflies laid eggs there and their caterpillars ran amok munching on leaves.
These days the hedge is kept trimmed and is the poorer for it. It’s basically lifeless. I see the odd butterfly, an occasional caterpillar and that’s it. So Passion Vine Butterflies, which I used to see all the time, have thinned out considerably in that area. However, I did spot this one feeding on Blue Heliotrope flowers not too far away.

The need for people to have things neat and tidy puzzles me especially when they serve as homes and food for so many

I will say that here, if things are left unchecked, one could wake up one morning and be unable to get out of the house! But it’s possible to keep things in order without quite such military trimming.

I only hack when its needed but my garden is ramshackle and the birds and insects love it

I agree with Jo, what a shame. Tidiness isn’t always good for nature. And you’ve caught both butterfly and flowers so clearly.

Thanks Karen. It was a more interesting hedge when it was more unruly.

What a shame, Graham. I wonder if anyone’s thought to suggest it be left untrimmed for the butterflies? This is such a lovely shot.

There was another hedge there which they took out completely, so at least this one still exists.
