In this view of the coast at Lapakahi State Historical Park, the large rock in the foreground was believed to be the home of Ku’ula, the fishing god. Local fishermen would leave a portion of their catch for him and, in return, would catch many fish next time they went out.

As Brian said, the seagulls would have appreciated the fishing god too.

They would indeed if there were any in Hawaii, but no seagulls here, except for the odd visiting that’s hitchhiked on a ship or got blown in.

I’ve seen one I think. Their habitat is shallow coastal waters and in Hawaii there’s not a lot of that.

Whatever works. I’ve had fishing failures that I’d gladly have traded for a small offering.

Me too. I regard myself as one of the world’s worst fishermen. The few fish I’ve caught have probably cost me several hundred dollars per pound when all the lost gear is factored in!

A good tradition for the seagulls or anyone who may need a seafood snack
