This Black Witch Moth showed up on the back lanai recently and was noteworthy for its size. The moths I notice have a wingspan of 6 inches or more. This one was an inch or so across, and presumably a juvenile. It looked a bit beaten up, as moths often do, so I don’t know whether it will go on to attain its full size. Here, it’s having a rest, tucked into the corner, out of the wind.

It definately looks battered! Not an easy life for moths, I suppose!

I guess not.

It does look a bit battered. Maybe I found it at the front door and used my sweeping broom to send it to another shady corner.

Don’t know whether it had a run in with something or just the weather. It was gone a while later so hopefully OK.

I had to evict a large black moth similar to your Black Witch Moth. We don’t have those in Australia. I’ll have to find out what our one is called but they are large too

I’ve never had one of the moths in the house, though it would be pretty easy to catch and evict I think. They tend to settle and stay put.

Not an easy life being a moth, I don’t imagine.

I’m amazed that some of the battered moths and butterflies I see can still fly!
