Sonny’s Place was a long-established restaurant in downtown Hawi. It was still in business when I first moved here, though it looked worse for wear even then. I was advised not to eat there. Within a couple of years it appeared to be shut down, though the difference was marginal at best.
Recently, someone bought the place and I wondered what they would do with it. Then this excavator appeared and I thought I should get photos before the building disappeared. I finally did a couple of Sundays ago. The next day the lot was cleared.

hope they replace it with something wonderful

It will be interesting to see what it looks like and what it gets used for.

It’s a quaint building Graham and I like those doors – they remind me of old 1920s doors that squeak every time you open them.

I bet these squeaked too, either from their age or from the rats they hit when they opened!

Yes, one of those instances when I took the photo in time. The have been others that I still think about missing!

It will live on in digital memories now. I’m sure a new structure will take its place and hopefully be successful.

Hopefully it fits in well. It’s right on a corner of the downtown intersection.

Looked like it could have been a good looking building in it’s day.

I think so. A lot of the old plantation buildings had a pleasing look. I know because I live in one of them!

That would have been an experience

They get updated inside but the look outside remains.

That is what happens with heritage stuff here as well

This touched my heart – to see that you captured this structure before it disappeared for good.

I’m all for preserving old buildings, but this one had been really let go and the termites had taken over. I hope whatever replaces it fits in with the town.
