This ’Io (Hawaiian hawk) is a resident at Pana’ewa Zoo & Gardens in Hilo. Seeing birds in a cage like this is a bit depressing to me, but this is a rescue bird and, because of injuries, it would not survive long in the wild. It did at least give me the chance to see it and appreciate what a majestic bird it is.

It’s a lovely bird, Graham. It looks about 30cm tall – is that right?

Probably a bit bigger than that, 40cm or so.

It’s great to see these birds up close, especially if they’re rescued due to injury. Beautiful bird. Hel ‘lo! 😁

It was great to see it this close although I wish the cages weren’t so prison-like.

I agree with Jo, it does have a look of sadness. I am glad it was rescued and has a life still even though caged

I think it was too badly hurt to rehabilitate, which is reason enough to look sad.

Somewhere safe and meals provided is OK but not the same as flying anywhere you want

And I think it knows that.

It does look sad, doesn’t it? Maybe when it’s well enough it’ll be able to fly, with restrictions. I’ve watched birds of prey shows and the birds have usually looked alert and focused xx

Well, it was definitely alert, but I think a little sad too. I think this one’s injuries were such that it wasn’t possible to rehabilitate it for release back into the wild. It will likely remain where it is.
