This ’Io (Hawaiian hawk) is a resident at Pana’ewa Zoo & Gardens in Hilo. Seeing birds in a cage like this is a bit depressing to me, but this is a rescue bird and, because of injuries, it would not survive long in the wild. It did at least give me the chance to see it and appreciate what a majestic bird it is.

It does look sad, doesn’t it? Maybe when it’s well enough it’ll be able to fly, with restrictions. I’ve watched birds of prey shows and the birds have usually looked alert and focused xx

Well, it was definitely alert, but I think a little sad too. I think this one’s injuries were such that it wasn’t possible to rehabilitate it for release back into the wild. It will likely remain where it is.
