Kerfuffle in the corral

Horses frolicking at Paniolo Adventures on the Big Island, Hawaii

Early yesterday morning, I drove over the Kohala Mountain Road and stopped at Paniolo Adventures, an outfit that offers horseback rides through the pastures and woods on the slopes of the mountain. Shafts of light cut through the trees lining the road, illuminating parts of the corral, where it was feeding time. The horses were tucking in, but not without some spirited discussion about who should eat where. Hooves were raised, tails flicked, ears laid back, and dust clouds kicked up. But ultimately, everyone got their breakfast to set them up for the day’s rides.

Great photos Graham. I bet the trail riders would be happy to know that the horses have that out of their system.
On a school camp, we went trail riding one day. My best mates horse had a mind of it’s own. It kept turning back to the stables and when it came close to other horses they would nip at it. He didn’t have the best experience first time on a horse

We see that a lot in the corral in Wyoming. Horses, like people, have buddies they hang out with and there are also those who take a serious dislike to certain others and bully them if possible, especially if they’re new. Excellent action shots.

Thanks Janet. I was surprised by all the activity mostly because they’re usually just standing around looking very docile. There were clearly one or two horses that didn’t get on with several of the others.
