A native of South and central America, Indian Shot Canna Lily (Canna indica) is believed to have arrived in Hawaii not long after Captain Cook and is now considered naturalized here.

I have seen a whole riverbank as far you could see each way, all Cannas. It was a river that went through a town so someone dumped garden waste with Cannas in it, probably more than once. They do spread

He must have brought it here, too, and it grows like a strong weed. Like bamboo.

I don’t think he was carrying it, but as more voyagers came to Hawaii they brought all sorts of things to trade and the like.
