Crown flowers (Calotropis gigantea) have a long history in Hawaii and have many uses including in leis. This solitary plant was growing in the lava near Kiholo, so they’re hardy too.

The lava must create good feed for it and I imagine those blooms are quite large if they’re used for leis.

They’re actually quite small, but solid. Some leis are quite compact.

It’s very pretty, Graham! I like that its used in leis. They must have that thicker feel to them.
