    There always looks to be such pent-up energy in coiled-up fiddle-heads. I like the contrast between the dry and the green fern leaves. The photo gives the impression that the ferns are enormous. Are they?

      They’re tree ferns and can grow to 20 feet or more. They’re quite common in wet, forested areas. Hiking through such places is a quintessential tropical rainforest experience.

          It is. There are several hikes where a trail goes from barren lava flows into pockets of rainforest in a matter of steps. It’s quite the contrast.
