In my seven plus years of living in Hawaii, I’d never encountered a scorpion. Then I saw my first, squashed, in a box I was emptying. Earlier this week I saw my second. It wasn’t dead, but it wasn’t well. I think it had been stepped on, which is why its large, claw-like pedipalps aren’t so prominent in this photo.
This is a lesser brown scorpion (Isometrus maculatus), the only scorpion species in Hawaii. It’s not as dangerous as some scorpions, with a sting similar to bees. It’s also not common, in part because it’s nocturnal and also small. This one was less than two inches long.
Oh poor thing. The detail in your photo reminds me that I always forget that scorpions are arachnids!

They’re so small, it’s easy not to notice them so I’m not too surprised it got stepped on. I keep looking for a live, healthy one, but so far without success.

That guy doesn’t look like our scorpions. He does look like he’s missing some body parts 😊😊 Fascinating. But I’d prefer not to get too close!

I stay on the lookout for a healthy scorpion scurrying about, but haven’t seen one yet. They’re so small and mostly active at night so i might never see one out and about.

That’s not a bad thing. The ones we have can be very painful. Even dangerous.

Yes, the scorpions here barely register on the list of things to watch out for, and I’m not complaining about that.
