My fish book notes that the large-spotted snake moray eel can be encountered both day and night, but is not often seen. That’s true in my experience. This is only the second one I’ve seen here and the first I’ve photographed.

They look scary up close! As kids, my brother was mesmerised by one he saw in an aquarium… I still remember him staring at it for ages and ages. Would be a bit spooky to actually spot one in the wild! It’s such a long one, too

A guy I know got bitten by an eel and still bears the scar. Some eels are notoriously ill-tempered, but I’ve never had any problems with them. I don’t tend to get in their faces. This one seemed positively mellow.
