For whatever reason, I don’t usually see much activity on bougainvillea flowers and I don’t see a lot of monarch butterflies. On this occasion though, this monarch was one of several insects feeding on a group of bougainvilleas.

Gorgeous contrasting colors, beautifully captured. 😊

Such a fantastic close up of the butterfly. The antennae are so precise and clear. Which part did you focus on?

Thanks, Amanda. I generally try and focus on the head, but butterflies flit around so much it’s very much a hit and miss process, at least for me.

Indeed. Butterflies settle and I focus on them, then spasmodically they flit away…. resulting in a blurred shot or one that is quickly deleted.

The monarch was actually quite cooperative, spending a fair amount of time on each flower. Next day a different butterfly was flitting around like it was in a pinball machine!

They must have more energetic moments just as we do!

I don’t think I’ve ever been that energetic!

Thanks, Brian. These flowers bloom for a long time round here, but I guess there must be a shorter time that brings the insects in.
