When it rains…

Heavy rain in Hawaii

A follow up to yesterday’s post, my commute yesterday was surprisingly good. Once I got to work though, things went downhill. Driving rain, rivers where they shouldn’t be, wading pools popping up everywhere. Oh, and thunder and lightning, a rare occurrence in these parts, in abundance.

The day was short and I left for home in another downpour, amid rumors of road closures and an overturned semi-truck on my route. Once I passed Kawaihae (where I did see the semi trailer conveniently off to one side of the road), the rain eased and getting home was a breeze. I even managed a trip to the gas station in blazing sunshine.

But later, the skies darkened, lightning flashed, and thunder cracked directly overhead. And rain lashed the house, driven sideways by gusts of wind. I think this was the hardest rain I’ve seen since I moved here. The photos don’t capture it, cowering as I was safely inside and taking photos through increasingly blurred windows.

According to the forecast, the system should pass overnight, and I will be very happy to wave it goodbye.

We have been having lots and lots of rain and storms in our region for the past few weeks. A bit scary at times and currently very, very soggy outside with damp, condensation and mildew indoors! And definitely not good weather for travelling anywhere.

Glad you are back to less extreme conditions. The earlier floods here were mostly coastal. Since then we have had weeks of ongoing rain in the interior. Today and tomorrow there are more flood warnings this time both in the interior and at the coast. The ground is so saturated by now it is hard to know to what extent localized flooding will result from this stint of heavy rain. The unusually prolonged La Nina is said to be the cause of the ongoing heavy rains.

I get about ten or more storms like that a Summer. I am so used to it. Gutters that can’t handle the amount of rain, river running through the yard and the pounding on the roof is deafening.
That was a great way to get off work early 😂

The foliage lost out in this one. It wasn’t just the heavy rain, but the unusual direction of it that did them in. They’ll bounce back though; they always do.

Freaky weather system is hitting the west coast in Canada too. Vancouver Island is getting more snow than Toronto even, but that’ll change soon. Wishing you a Happy (& dry) Christmas!
