This Black Witch Moth spent the day resting under the eaves of the house. The wingspan is a good six inches and it was in perfect condition, not like some of the battered individuals I’ve seen before.

What a gorgeous moth!

They have lovely markings, especially when they’re in good shape like this one was.

I have those as well in Summer. I actually threw one out of the house the other day. When the kids were small we called them Bat Moths and there were lots around the house.

They’re come and go here. In Hawaiian folklore, this moth is considered to represent the soul of a recently deceased loved one returning to say goodbye. Can’t say I’ve noticed any such correlation.

Over one Summer a while ago, I must have had over fifty deceased loved ones dropping in to say goodbye, sometimes four or five at a time 😂
