The top photo shows a view of Hualalai under cloudy skies, taken from the water yesterday morning.

The second photo shows pretty much the same view, taken on Christmas Day morning. What do you mean, where did it go? It was actually a less cloudy day. The big difference was that the wind was blowing from the southeast, driving vog from the latest eruption of Kilauea in this direction. Vog is volcanic smog and when itโs this thick, it can be quite acrid and you can taste it! It makes life miserable, especially for those with any kind of respiratory ailments.
The vog was bad for two days before the trade winds returned and blew the vog away from this part of the island, allowing the view in the top photo.

So it’s not just viz underwater that is a thing!

No, we get heavy rain and vog, though rarely any fog!

It’s a remarkable phenomenon, but not really scary for us.

Oh my goodness, it must have been bad with the big! Glad you’re okay.

Where I live is the safest place on the island, but we still see the effects of eruptions from time to time.

Glad to hear that Graham!

Clever post, Graham, but Iโm sorry about your vog. Iโm always learning something from posts!

It doesn’t often reach up as far as where I live so I can’t complain. When it does though, it’s so striking how visibility is reduced.

Wow, what a difference between the two!

That’s what I thought. It catches the eye when something relatively close is suddenly gone!

Isn’t that the case. These last few years have been pretty good as the volcano has been fairly quiet. Doesn’t take long for it to return though.

Vog would be horrible to have to live with. I guess it carries nutrients though

I’m not sure what nutrients it carries. I do know it can be damaging to plants and animals though. There’s a lot of sulphur dioxide involved.

OK it is a shit of thing unless you like sulphur dioxide

Spooky how it just vanishes

Yes, it was very thick for a couple of days.

Iโm glad the trade winds returned to clear the air, it must have been such a relief. Glad you are safe.

Where I live, near the northern tip of the island, we don’t get much vog, but it makes it up here, and to other islands, once in a while. These last few years have been good because there hasn’t really been much activity.
