A bee forages on ’Ulei flowers. ’Ulei, also known as Hawaiian Hawthorn, is an indigenous shrub that grows in a variety of habitats. I saw this one hiking on the Kau Desert Trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
It’s a small flower, judging by the bee, and the leaves are a pretty shade of green. Does the flower have a scent that attracts your gaze, or is a flowering bush hard to miss?

My sense of smell is terrible, but anything blooming in a lava field gets my attention.
