The old Kohala sugar railroad is now a trail, at least for a mile or two north of Mahukona. It’s very curvy with many cuttings and embankments. In the early morning, the walk is a succession of changes from shade to sun and back again.

Would have been in interesting drive for the train driver

Interesting and slow. All those curves had to be taken at a very moderate speed. On that walk are places where the original path of the railway can be seen and that was even more winding.

An inviting place to walk, Graham. Where do you see the whales?

Brian is right of course, but you can see them anywhere around the island. The best area is on the west side between Kona and Kohala. Last week, after a swim at Mahukona, I said to my wife, “I still haven’t seen any whales this year … Oh, there’s one now!” And if you’re lucky, you can see then in the water. Don’t know whether you saw this post (https://grahamsisland.com/2025/01/26/another-thrilling-humpback-whale-encounter/) from January of this year, but it’s an encounter I won’t ever forget!

What an awesome experience, Graham! Of course what I meant by asking where you can see them, was that in the picture, I didn’t see any water. Maybe I just missed it. Obviously whales would be in the water. Lol.

Ah, now I understand. The water is just off to the right. This part of the trail is right on the water’s edge, but up about 50 feet or so.

It’s a good area for it. Sometimes the whales are quite close to shore and very active too.

I really enjoy these daily snippets of life in Hawaii. Imagining walking here

I’m glad you like them. It’s pretty dry here so not a lot of wildlife about, but whale season is just starting and it’s a great place to watch for them.

I remember spotting whales from outside Maui airport with the help of an airport employee! One of my most exotic airport experiences

I wouldn’t doubt it. You could also see them from Kona airport and certainly while coming in to land. I confess that I watch for whales while driving the coast road from Hawi to Kona and see quite a lot during the season.

almost as dramatic as mine today, but think I’d prefer to walk in yours anytime

In the afternoon it’s mostly open to the sun here. A good place to watch the sunset!
