I think this is Natal grass (Melinis repens). It’s native to southern Africa and is considered something of a weed in many other places, including here. It still looked beautiful on this early morning.

It is a lovely picture. Your comment about how the picture didn’t capture how the pink glowed in the sun, made me think of the aspens in Colorado.

The morning or afternoon light shows Natal Grass so well Graham. It’s a pest weed here as well

I think it’s a weed everywhere except it’s natural habitat, where there are checks and balances in place so it doesn’t run amok!

Not sure what, if anything, eats it here. It’s not a plant that I see everywhere, just in the pastures on this side of Mauna Kea.

It is along the road side in places driving to and from town. Mainly where there is a farm and open country. Not much in the bush if any. I found out who eats it.
Zebras, gazelles, and various species of antelope, as well as domestic cattle and sheep.
Rodents such as the African grass rat (Arvicanthis niloticus) are primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses, leaves, and stems. Rabbits and hares are also known to eat a wide variety of grasses.
While there is no specific evidence that Australian native rodents eat red natal grass

People love attractive plants, but they should do their research before introducing them where they’ll become problematic.

The Natal grass sure makes a beautiful backdrop, Graham. Is it pink or is that the morning light? Good reminder that flowering grasses are a great addition to Flower Hour!
