Pueo head on a swivel
This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Layers.’ (See more offerings here.) I thought about the layering of bird feathers, in this case of a pueo (Hawaiian short-eared owl) surveying its surrounds, watchful for threats while also scanning for meal opportunities. Its diligence paid off shortly afterwards when it dove down and snagged a mouse (here).
That is cool you caught this in action, Graham, what a gorgeous bird! No worries about the theme change, an owl’s life is very layered!

This was a very cooperative bird, not at all flustered by my presence. It hung around for a long time.

Yes indeed. It’s a bit freaky watching the head going all the way round. Terri changed the theme for this week, but luckily this post still worked for the new ‘Layers’ theme.
