This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is ‘Gray.’ See more offerings here.
This photo shows a pueo, the native Hawaiian short-eared owl, gliding over a gray road beneath a gray sky. This is a stretch of Old Saddle Road, which is one of the best places to see pueos as they hunt in the pastures on either side of the road or rest on fence posts alongside the road.

Love everything about this photo Graham 🙂

Thanks. Rain or shine up there, I usually get to see the pueos. It’s one of my favorite drives for that reason.

Well, I figured it out, but for a while I was wondering what Search Engine Optimization had to do with the photo!

Love the capture of movement everywhere in the image, Graham, from the owl’s flight to the curving ribbon of the road. I wonder if the gray and lack of shadows helps the owl find his meal?

Thanks, Terri. Not sure the gray makes much difference. They have great vision and also hearing so they’re great hunters in all weathers, but like most predators they don’t always get lucky with their strikes.
